Body Alphabet

Body Alphabet is Zoe Nguyen's own journey of finding her way to perceive her body and appearance. This series is about taking ownership over one's body and paying it the utmost respect for its uniqueness. Reflecting on her experience as a Vietnamese woman, Zoe recalls the obsession with the Westernized beauty standard that has always been revered by men in the paternal society she grew up in. This has impacted how women dress and their perception of one's appearance. In the making of this project, Zoe has a chance to open her mind and has come to the realization that only she can take control of her own body. "My body needs not meet any social standards to be deemed beautiful - it is already beautiful on its own". To disseminate this idea, the artist created this body of work, which comprises two primary subjects - the human body and light. The light and shadow that reveals only certain parts of a naked body allow viewers to look at it with an otherwise limited point of view that allows them to freely envision what they consider as "ideal", therefore liberating the women's genuine beauty from the cangue of society's expectations.
